Overview: “My staff is either panicked or thinks COVID-19 is silly.” This presentation will discuss strategies, resources, and tips to support people with IDD to understand what’s going on with COVID-19, why do we need to take precautions, and how will protections help us. Additionally, we will discuss how to advocate for legal rights and reasonable accommodations.
Learning Objectives:
- identify strategies and resources to support people with IDD to understand issues with COVID-19;
- use strategies and resources to discuss COVID-19 precautions with people they are supporting and how precautions can help us; and,
- discuss information about legal rights and reasonable accommodations with people they are supporting to access health care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Presenter: As an RN since 1973, Kathy Service, RN, MS, FNP-BC, CDDN has been working in the field of intellectual/developmental disabilities since 1976, first as a RN and since 1979, as a nurse practitioner both in institutional and community settings for the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services. She was one of the first RN’s nationally to be certified in the specialty of developmental disabilities (DD) nursing. Although retired since 2016, she continues to work as a clinician, health care consultant, educator, and advocate to people with DD, their families, staff, and to other health care providers in the general community. She has both nationally and internationally served on advisory boards, consulted in both federal and foundational grants and presented sessions and has written articles, text chapters, and educational modules on the topics of aging, dementia, loss and grief, and nursing care of individuals with IDD. She has served on the Steering Committee of the National Task Group on Dementia and Intellectual Disabilities since the inception and truly believes that people with IDD their families and their staff are her best teachers.
